PATTERNS AND ELEMENTS We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us. - Winston Churchill. These images represent a view of the world using the lens as a microscope, to view the patterns and elements that are evident throughout all of creation, both natural and man made. I have used architectural details to demonstrate these patterns. They often appear on a "microscopic" level, so a viewer that is moving through a space might not consciously notice them. By enhancing the picture in the studio, I am mining what is in the digital image; I want to find the essence that is hidden there, and bring it to the surface. In doing this, I can emphasize those elements that are felt on an experiential level, and let the viewers discover the essence for themselves. These patterns cannot be described using only language and measurable means; they must be experienced. Language and analysis can be an impediment to understanding patterns on the deepest level.
